How to Collect Google Reviews from Customers — Practical Tips

March 7, 20266 min read

Think about it: when was the last time you picked a restaurant, mechanic, or dentist without checking Google reviews? Your customers do the exact same thing. Reviews are digital word-of-mouth — and businesses with more positive reviews attract more customers. The problem? Most satisfied customers don't leave reviews on their own. You have to ask.

Why Are Google Reviews So Important?

  • Trust — 88% of people trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations
  • Google ranking — more reviews = higher position in local search results
  • Purchase decision — customers compare you with competitors and choose the business with better reviews

Method 1: Create a Direct Review Link

Google lets you generate a special link that takes the customer straight to the review form. They don't have to search for anything — just click and write. You'll find this link in your Google Business Profile dashboard under "Ask for reviews". You can send it via SMS, email, or put it on business cards.

Method 2: Ask at the Right Moment

The best time to ask for a review is right after finishing a service — when the customer is satisfied and the experience is fresh. Carpenter: after installing furniture. Dentist: after a successful visit. Mechanic: when picking up the car. A simple "If you're happy with the service, I'd appreciate a Google review" works wonders.

Method 3: Send a Text or Message After the Service

A short SMS or WhatsApp message the day after the service: "Thanks for trusting us! If you're satisfied, we'd appreciate a Google review: [link]". Simple, polite, and effective. Most people are happy to help — you just need to make it easy for them.

Method 4: Respond to Every Review

It's not just about collecting — it's also about responding. Reply to positive reviews (say thanks) and negative ones (apologize, offer a solution). This shows future customers that you care about quality and that you're a professional.

What NOT to Do

  • Don't buy fake reviews — Google detects them and can penalize your business
  • Don't offer discounts for reviews — this violates Google's terms of service
  • Don't ignore negative reviews — no response looks worse than the review itself

Google reviews are free marketing that works for you 24/7. Start collecting them today — the more you have, the more customers will find you.

Don't have a Google Business Profile yet? Without one, collecting reviews is pointless. Read our guide on how to set it up in 15 minutes.
